What are the French Days?
The French Days is a commercial event spread over a week where you can find many promotions on a wide range of products. Often considered the spring and autumn sales period, the French Days were launched in 2018 and are spread over 4 days (sometimes 5). The operation is at the origin of an initiative of 6 major French brands: Boulanger, Cdiscount, Fnac-Darty, Rue du Commerce, La Redoute and Private Showroom. The objective was originally to seduce French people who were reluctant to buy online.
On paper, the operation is closer to Black Friday than sales: promotions last as long as there is stock. You must therefore be reactive and go directly to the purchase if a product interests you.
What to choose: electric bike or electric scooter?
For many, the choice of an e-bike or an e-scooter is obvious. Need something that fits in the trunk of your car and doesn’t break the bank? Buy an electric scooter! Want an extra workout? Take an electric bike! But if you’re not set on one or the other, the decision can be more complicated. Here are some additional points to consider while shopping at French Days.
Portability
There are really light scooters, which weigh little more than 10 kg. Almost all modern and popular scooters are very portable. When folded, they turn into a nice little rectangle that’s not that difficult to carry around. The same can be said for e-bikes. They are on average a little heavier, but only slightly. Also, only true off-road bikes weigh more than 30 kg.
While scooters are lighter than bicycles in terms of mass, they also trump in volume and portability. Many e-bikes are not foldable at all. This gives them the same portability as a regular bike, which, as you may know, isn’t the easiest to transport. Not necessarily because of its weight, but because of its shape and all the parts that stick out. Storing an e-scooter will also be easier than an e-bike due to its smaller volume. On the occasion of the French Days 2022, you will find many promotions on electric scooters at Cdiscount.
The price
Electric scooters are, overall, more affordable than e-bikes. Although there are expensive scooters, most of the time the barrier of entry is much lower than for electric bikes. Entry-level scooters from well-established manufacturers cost less than $400. On the other hand, there are few electric bikes that can be recommended for less than 800 €.
The price/performance ratio trend is also different between e-bikes and e-scooters. Electric scooters are part of a newer, less regulated market, so higher prices often mean higher speeds and better range. In the case of e-bikes, battery size and speed are generally more standardized, so paying more usually results in higher quality components and lighter weights rather than raw power gains. .
Autonomy
Most e-bikes offer much better range than similarly priced scooters because they require you to do some of the work. It’s rare to see a scooter with more than 40 kilometers of realistic range, whereas for e-bikes this is quite normal, especially with range extender mechanisms.
More importantly, e-bikes are still fully functional when range runs out. Although you’ll probably end up with a heavy bike when your battery fails, you should be able to get home on your own. In comparison, it is much more difficult to use an electric scooter when the battery is depleted. On the other hand, the latter will have less difficulty sneaking into a bus or a metro with you to complete the journey.
