Time and daily aggressions inevitably leave traces on the skin of our face. To prevent and counter the effects of skin aging, it is therefore recommended to adopt a good anti-aging routine. Yes, but some – lost by the words that we can read and hear – already seem resigned to the first signs of aging and think they have missed the boat. But is it really too late? We asked Sylvie Pères, dermatologist and co-founder of the Alaena Cosmétique brand.
Does age really matter?
Let it be said now: it’s never too late to adopt a good anti-aging skincare routine! But more than a question of age, the first thing to do is to look at your skin type and be attentive to its needs. Indeed, “dry and fine skin may feel the need to be nourished and plumped up earlier,” explains Sylvie Perez. The anti-aging treatment is then suitable from the thirties. On the other hand, on oily skin, with excess sebum and/or some imperfections, fine lines may appear later”.
Furthermore, “if wrinkles are the major marker of skin ageing, you also have to watch out for the appearance of pigment spots on the skin, loss of volume, firmness or lack of radiance,” explains Sylvie Pères. And to continue: “The effects of time can be different depending on the way of life and the heredity of each person. They can be located on the forehead, on the corners of the lips, at the corner of the eyes, but also in the neck and on the décolleté. Superficial at first, wrinkles will spread and deepen over time.
And if we can treat the signs of aging as soon as they appear, we can also prevent them, thanks to a simple gesture: protect yourself from the sun, the first factor in skin aging. Indeed, « the sun is responsible for helioderma which induces brown spots and dilated vessels, but also slackening of the skin », confides the expert. Faced with this major risk of skin aging (not to mention the other dangers), it is therefore advisable to apply strict sun protection from an early age, summer and winter (even though the beauty routine is still far from our concerns) . In addition, the expert recommends wearing a hat and sunglasses in addition to favoring shade to protect the skin.
What good routine to adopt then?
The right care
Very often, mature skin lacks hydration. This phenomenon is explained by the decrease in sebum production and the decrease in cell renewal. “But that’s not all, according to Sylvie Pères. The phenomenon affects all the structures: the resorption of the bone, the modification of the deep tissues – in particular the fatty tissues, the appearance of spots…”. It is therefore necessary to deal with all the factors. For this, dermatology advises to “turn to treatments with natural active ingredients – which have a great affinity with the cells of the skin – in order to provide hydration but also proteins, vitamins and antioxidants”. According to the pro, polyphenols from plants (in cosmetic care or in food) are a good example. Thanks to their antioxidant action and anti-free radicals, they slow down the process of senescence (physiological process which leads to the degradation of cell functions at the origin of the aging of the organism, editor’s note) and stimulate skin renewal”.
In practice, the expert recommends the application of an eye contour, a radiance serum and an anti-aging moisturizing cream morning and evening. Thus, the treatments – with various formulas and active ingredients – act in a complementary way on the different areas to be treated. In addition to nourishing treatments, peelings (to be done once a week, preferably in the evening) help accelerate cell renewal, restore radiance and reduce dark spots. Pair with a moisturizing mask to leave on all night.
The good gestures
Once the right products have been chosen, how do you apply them properly? First of all, it is advisable to resort to an ascending gesture, in other words to always apply the care from the bottom to the top of the face, so as not to accentuate the effects of gravity and therefore the slackening of the skin.
As for the fine and fragile area around the eyes, “we apply our care to the lower eyelid while smoothing from the inside out, specifies the expert. Then, we repeat the same gesture on the upper eyelid. In addition, to reduce puffiness and dark circles, gently stroke the fingertips on the area concerned.
In addition, the dermatologist recommends massages (even self-massages) of the face in order to “stimulate cellular tissues and reduce sagging skin”. She cites in particular the Japanese facial massage by the name of kobido. “It focuses on the muscular areas of the face in order to provide radiance, shape and tone”.
The little extra?
A good skincare routine does not go without a healthy lifestyle. This includes a balanced diet and regular physical activity “outdoors if possible”. For this, the expert combines « stretching of the joints, toning of the spine and balance work ». She also advises “yoga, dance, Pilate, Qi Gong or even tai chi which, in addition to bringing serenity, allows good oxygenation of the tissues thanks to breathing work and inverted positions”.
Last but not least, the expert concludes with these words: “To each their own experience of the first wrinkle. However, I like to say that you shouldn’t ruin your life for that. It is good to put things into perspective and enjoy the development of maturity. This does not mean doing nothing… But it is good to maintain serenity, benevolence towards oneself”. On good terms!
