Usually, bad news about global warming heralds one worrying record at a time. The latest report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) contains four for 2021.

For those who believe that « global warming (Global warming, also called global warming, or…) » is only a problem of increasing the temperature (Temperature is a physical quantity measured using a thermometer and…)there are therefore four of the key indicators that broke a record last year: concentrations of gas (A gas is a set of atoms or molecules very weakly bound and…) to greenhouse effect (The greenhouse effect is a natural process which, for a given absorption of energy…)rise in water level, temperature of oceans (Oceans stylized Ωceans is a French documentary directed by…) and ocean acidification. For those who still doubt that humans are responsible for the changes taking place, it becomes even more difficult to ignore that all these changes at the same weather (Time is a concept developed by human beings to apprehend the…) and to such speed (We distinguish 🙂 would have been impossible without the contribution of our fossil fuels.

And that’s not counting the dozen other indicators (glaciers, extreme events, floods, heat waves, etc.) which, without breaking a record, are well within the mean (The average is a statistical measure characterizing the elements of a set of…) superiority of the last decades or the last century (A century is now a period of a hundred years. The word comes from the Latin saeculum, i, which…) and half. « It’s only a matter of time before we see a new record ofyear (A year is a unit of time expressing the duration between two occurrences of a related event…) the hottest », commented the big boss of the OMM on Wednesday morning in Geneva, during the publication of the State of Global Climate 2021. « Our climate (Climate is the statistical distribution of atmospheric conditions in a…) changes before our eyes. »

The oceans are often overlooked in year-end reviews, but the impact of what happens to them cannot be underestimated.

Temperature of the first 2000 meters of depth, for example, will continue to increase for decades, whatever happens in the next few years in matter (Matter is the substance that makes up any body having a tangible reality. Its…) greenhouse gas reduction greenhouse (A greenhouse is a generally closed structure intended for production…).

acidification (which has increased by 30% since the industrial revolution of the 19th century) refers to the fact that the oceans absorb about a quarter of our GHG emissions: the advantage is that it limits the quantities that accumulate in theatmosphere (The word atmosphere can have several meanings:)but on the other hand, it limits the capacity of the plankton (Homer designated the animals wandering on the surface of the waves by plankton, from the Greek…) to renew itself, it weakens the corals and it disturbs the biodiversity (Biodiversity is the natural diversity of living organisms. It is appreciated…) marine, therefore fisheries, therefore human food security.

Sea level rise -4.5 mm per year between 2013 and 2021, double the 1990s- in addition to displacing millions of people, making hundreds of millions more vulnerable to future storms.

Annual rise (in millimetres) in sea level, 1993-2021

The report can be seen as a complement to this year’s IPCC report: it is much less voluminous, but it includes data (In information technology (IT), data is an elementary description, often…) more recent, i.e. from 2020 and 2021.

The data in question is based on six major international databases, under the aegis of British (HadCRUT), American (NOAAGlobalTemp, NASA (The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (« National Administration of…) GISTEMP and Berkeley Earth), European (ERA5) and Japanese (JRA-55).
